blabla halloween

everyone loves BlaBla Kids! everywhere i look, i see another baby holding on to a doll from BlaBla. how can you not love them? the dolls are super soft, super cute, and super cuddly. i get really excited when i see them in the store. i have to pick up every doll i see and carry it around. last time i was at the Land of Nod, i actually threw a pretty substantial fit all because i had to give back the little orange girl doll that i was gripping in my hands so tightly. it took hours for me to get over the fact that i couldn't take her home. just devastating i tell you. being a needy little girl that is. but oh well. she had to go back to her bin. but i am sure if i saw one of these awesome halloween dolls, i would hold on so so tight that no one would be able to pry them from my hands.

unmasked kitty

mommy is mad! and i don't really get why. did she really think that i was going to wear a full head piece with a mask for halloween. seriously mommy? i can't even keep a bow or a barrette in my hair these days. i tear them out off my head as soon as you put them in. but a mask? no way! no how! and i don't care if this means that i will mess up the entire family costume concept and picture. i am not doing it! why can't i just be something normal like Dorothy from Wizard of Oz? no head piece. no tight cat suit. just a dress! maybe my bear can wear the mask instead.

from mom's kitchen - best southwest turkey burgers ever!

these turkey burgers are so good that my big brother Nini doesn't even complain that there is no beef. i can't possibly fit them in my mouth but i sure have fun trying. i know you are going to love these burgers too! oh, and the over fried potato wedges are just as tasty specially when you eat them with the secret dipping sauce.

Ingredients

3 large baking potatoes
1 teaspoon paprika
3 tablespoons olive oil
1 package ground turkey breast (1-1.25 lbs)
1/3 cup diced sweet vidalia or red onion (small dice)
1/2 teaspoon poultry seasoning
4 slices chihuahua cheese
4 hamburger buns
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1 teaspoon chipotles in adobo sauce
1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
salt
freshly ground black pepper
lettuce leaves, sliced tomatoes, red onions and avocado for garnish

Directions

1. preheat your oven to 425 degrees fahrenheit

2. prep the potatoes - cut the potatoes in half and then into wedges about 1/4 inch wide on the bottom. each potato should yield about 10-12 wedges

3. put the wedges on a foiled lined baking sheet and toss with 1/2 teaspoon salt, pepper, olive oil and paprika

4. arrange the seasoned potatoes on the baking sheet in one layer standing as many wedges as possible upright. bake until the wedges are golden brown and fork tender about 45-50 minutes.

5. make the burgers - season the ground turkey with 1/2 teaspoon salt, black pepper, and poultry seasoning. add the diced onions to turkey and work them into the meat to incorporate.

6. divide the turkey mixture into 4 equal portions. take each portion and form into a ball. flatten each into a patty. brush both sides of the patties with olive oil.

7. grill the patties about 2 minutes on each side. remove from the grill and top each patty with a slice of cheese. cover the burgers with a dome lid if you like to speed up the melting process.

8. make the secret sauce - whisk together the mayo, chipotles, 1/4 teaspoons salt, black pepper, and lemon juice.

9. toast the buns on the grill and assemble the burgers. this is how we usually build ours from the bottom up - bun, layer of secret sauce, patty, tomato, red onion, avocado slices, lettuce, some more secret sauce, bun. a side of potato wedges with some more secret sauce for dipping! YUM!

Yield: 4 burgers

a normal two-year-old?

i think that i am a pretty normal two-year-old. i run around a lot, i like to build blocks and i talk all the time even though sometimes people around me have a hard time understanding. i know some letters, like E and W and R, i know how to count to 10 (i make a couple of mistakes along the way of course), and i make meticulous little circles when i draw. but every time i see my grandpa he is always asking my mommy if i do everything that a two-year-old should be doing. i think that he secretly hopes to hear that i am a genius or something. grandpa always needs to be convinced that his grandchildren are special and gifted in some way. or, at least, that they are better at stuff when compared to other children their age. i guess it's nice that he thinks we are more talented then others, but i wonder if his opinion would change if he knew little secrets about Nini and me, like that i went poo-poo on the floor more than just that one time i told you about, or, that Nini spent the entire first month of second grade in isolation from the rest of the class because he just couldn't stop talking.

so, am i really normal for a two year old? are you? i don't know! and i don't think mommy does either because her usual response to grandpa's inquiry is, "i think so." i mean it's been a long time since Nini was a two-year-old. so just to make sure that i am developing normally (or as grandpa hopes above and beyond normally), mommy did some research about developmental milestones. and apparently this is what a normal two-year-old is supposed to be able to do. i certainly hope that being able to pick your nose all by yourself is on the list.

Movement Milestones
* walks alone
* pulls toys behind her while walking
* carries large toy or several toys while walking
* begins to run
* stands on tiptoe
* kicks a ball
* climbs onto and down from furniture unassisted
* walks up and down stairs holding on to support

Hand & Finger Skills
* scribbles spontaneously
* turns over container to pour out contents
* builds tower of four blocks or more
* might use one hand more frequently than the other

Language Milestones
* points to object or picture when it's named for him
* recognizes names of familiar people, objects, and body parts
* says several single words
* uses simple phrases
* uses two- to four-word sentences
* follows simple instructions
* repeats words overheard in conversation

Cognitive Milestones
* finds objects even when hidden under two or three covers
* begins to sort by shapes and colors
* begins make-believe play

Social & Emotional Milestones
* imitates the behavior of others, specially adults and older
children
* increasingly aware of herself as separate from others
* increasingly enthusiastic about company and other children
* demonstrates increasing independence
* begins to show defiant behavior
* increasing episodes of separation anxiety toward midyear, then they fade

guess what? according to this list - i am not only normal but i may be a genius after all! i have been exhibiting defiant behavior ever since i was one. way, way ahead of schedule. oh i am so glad! grandpa is going to be so proud!

discover modnique - awesome giveaway

do you like paying retail? my mom surely doesn't. i mean why pay full price for something if you can get it for so much less at a flash sale site like Modnique.com. right? i thought so. a little birdie recently told me that Modnique is dedicating the last week in October (23rd to 29th) to a series of child-centric events. the site will have everything from room decor, the latest kid's fashions, and children's literature on sale with massive savings! now it's always convenient and fun to shop online but have you ever shopped online during a live book signing? probably not! but during this event you will be able to.

exclusively at Modnique, well-known and celebrated children's author/illustrator Barney Saltzberg, will sign a personal dedication to you when you place an order. Saltzberg recently released Beautiful Oops!, an interactive children's book that emphasizes "(a) life lesson that all parents want their children to learn: it's OK to make a mistake. in fact, hooray for mistakes! a mistake is an adventure in creativity, a portal of discovery." sounds like a great lesson, specially for Nini who makes millions of mistakes on a daily basis. i, on the other hand, do everything perfectly right every time! for now that is!

to celebrate the child-centric sales events i just told you about, Modnique is giving away a signed copy of Barney Saltzberg's Beautiful Oops! to one of my lucky readers.

all you have to do to enter the giveaway is leave a comment below.

* giveaway will be open worldwide until Midnight EST Sunday, October 24
* winner will be randomly selected by random.org and announced here on this site on Monday, October 25. please check back to see if you won.
